What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose — addressing size, projection, symmetry, tip definition, bridge contour, or breathing function. It can be performed as an open (small external incision) or closed (all incisions inside the nose) procedure, depending on the complexity. Rhinoplasty is typically done under general anesthesia and takes 2–4 hours. Most patients return home the same day.

Open rhinoplasty leaves a very small scar at the base of the columella that typically fades to near-invisibility within 6–12 months. Closed rhinoplasty leaves no external scarring.
Open rhinoplasty uses a small external incision across the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils), allowing direct visualization of the nasal structures. Closed rhinoplasty places all incisions inside the nose. Your surgeon will recommend the right approach based on your anatomy and the changes desired.
You'll see significant improvement within the first few weeks, but final results take 12–18 months as residual swelling fully resolves. This is especially true for tip refinement, which is the last area to settle.
A nasal splint is worn for 1–2 weeks. Most patients return to work within 1–2 weeks, though bruising and swelling may be visible for 2–3 weeks. The majority of swelling resolves within 3 months, but final results — especially tip refinement — can take up to 12–18 months to fully appear.
